Giannopouleio Archaeological Museum of Almyros
The Giannopouleio Archaeological Museum of Almyros is housed in a neoclassical building from 1930, located in the southeastern part of the city. It was founded by the Philarchaean Society “Othrys”, established in 1896 by a group of scientists, scholars, and wealthy citizens of the region, inspired by Nikolaos Giannopoulos. The society aimed to collect and preserve antiquities, manuscripts, and books from the Almyros province and all of Thessaly.
The museum showcases exhibits from the Neolithic period to the Hellenistic era, organized into three rooms. Room A displays finds from Phthiotic Thebes, including marble sculptures dedicated to Asclepius and Athena Polias, as well as artifacts from the city’s ancient theater. Room B focuses on the prehistory of the region, featuring Neolithic-era exhibits such as pottery, tools, and jewelry, along with artifacts from the extensive tumulus cemetery at the “Voulokalyva” site. Room C presents objects from the Hellenistic city of Alos, including vases, figurines, tools, and coins, offering insight into the daily life and trade activities of its inhabitants.
Additionally, the museum functions as a cultural center, hosting events, educational programs, and art exhibitions. It also houses the library of the Philarchaean Society “Othrys”, which contains rare books on history and archaeology.
